2.5. a. Accommodate Learner Differences

Details:
In ISTE Standard 2.5.a “Accommodate Learner Differences”, educators use technology to address diverse learning needs by providing options for independent study. Adaptive software, assistive technologies, and differentiated instruction, such as targeted activity following diagnostic quizzes, enable personalized scaffolding for struggling learners and enrichment for advanced learners.

Substandards:
– One of the substandards requires using diagnostic assessments to prescribe personalized learning modules by technology integration skill.
– Another requires individualizing tasks using digital tools like Canvas Quiz, and Google Keep, which enable students to reflect, record, and personalize learning.

My Current Level of Competence

I have prior experience in providing differentiated learning opportunities through customizing assignments according to students’ individual needs. I have used tools such as Google Docs for scaffolding, and Canvas Quizzes to adjust instruction according to learners’ performance in previous courses. My use of adaptive and assistive technologies, however, has been limited and focused on elementary differentiation, and not on employing extensive diagnostic-based personalization.

Targeted Level of Competence

Short-term:
In the following month, I will create and implement a differentiated activity in EDU-214. The activity will begin with a diagnostic Canvas Quiz to assess students’ knowledge of educational technologies. Based on the results, students will be placed into groups to receive customized modules: beginners will get foundational guidance, intermediate learners will collaborate on tool-based lesson planning, and advanced learners will create technology-integrated mini-projects. Tools used will include Canvas Quiz, Google Docs, and Google Keep for reflection.

Long-term:
By the next year, I hope to have a fully adaptive learning module in EDU-214 that utilizes assistive technologies such as Google Keep for resource management so that future educators know how to create inclusive, technology-based environments. The module will guide future pre-service teachers through the use of differentiated instruction principles to meet the diverse needs of their future students.

A Plan of Action to Reach My Short-Term Goal

Week 1:

I will learn diagnostic tools and methods for differentiation of technology instruction and create a Canvas Quiz to assess students’ familiarity with learning technologies.

Week 2:

I will create learning activity differentiated from quiz results, providing additional resources and support for struggling students and more complex tasks for more advanced students.

Status:
This week, I developed a differentiated learning module titled “Exploring Digital Tools in Teaching” based on Canvas Quiz results. Students were grouped by skill level: beginners practiced basic features of Google Docs through guided tasks (e.g., sharing, commenting, formatting), intermediate learners created collaborative lesson plans using Padlet, and advanced learners designed technology-integrated activities using multiple tools like Google. All students reflected on their learning using Google keep. The activity is now ready for implementation in EDU-214 to support diverse learner needs.

Week 3:

I will use the diagnostic quiz and differentiated activities in EDU-214, monitor student engagement, and collect feedback through Padlet reflections on the adaptive learning process.

Status:

In Week 3, I monitored for student engagement throughout the week and noticed that students responded well to the adaptive structure, especially those who previously had challenges with a one-size-fits-all approach. To get feedback, I asked them to post short reflections on Padlet ( https://padlet.com/kamalisa/add-your-reflection-here-uccnyyz373ukhjdk) about their experience with the differentiated activities. Their responses showed increased awareness of their own learning needs, appreciation of the individualized approach, and motivation by being allowed to work at their own pace.

Week 4:

I will evaluate the effectiveness of the differentiated activities by reviewing student work across all levels: Google Docs tasks from beginners, Padlet lesson plans from intermediate learners, and skip-logic Google Forms from advanced learners. I will assess how well each activity met learners’ needs and begin compiling a reflection summary and student artifacts for my final portfolio.

Status:

This week, I reviewed actual student work and reflections in Google Keep. Beginner learners successfully navigated Google Docs basics like commenting and formatting. Intermediate learners creatively used Padlet to map out tech-based lesson ideas, while advanced learners designed thoughtful Google Forms with skip logic. Reflections showed increased engagement, confidence, and clarity about using technology in the classroom. I’ve started compiling student artifacts and drafting my final reflection.

Artifact collection:
For my artifact selection, I selected one quality sample per student group to demonstrate how my differentiated activity supported various learner needs. From the foundation group, I have included a Google Doc with appropriate use of commenting and formatting. The intermediate sample contains a Padlet board with multiple reflective lesson planning posts. The advanced example is a Google Form using skip logic with clear instructional purpose. I included a Google Keep reflection, which determines learner self-awareness and engagement. These artifacts serve as proof that the activity considered various skill levels and encouraged autonomous, personalized learning.

Update of all weeks and relation to long-term goals:

This week concludes four weeks of accomplishment of my short-term objectives. In four weeks, I utilized a series of differentiated teaching practices responding to various levels of student digital proficiency, promoting self-regulation, and facilitating inclusive learning experiences.
In Week 1, I used a diagnostic quiz to identify student levels of proficiency and grouped learners accordingly.

Throughout Week 2, I built tiered tasks: beginners undertook foundational abilities within Google Docs, intermediates produced lesson ideas in Padlet, and superior pupils created skip-logic quizzes within Google Forms.

Throughout Week 3, I monitored attendance and gained insights through reflections within Padlet. Student comments showed increased motivation and worth placed upon personalized learning streams.

Throughout Week 4, I analyzed student work and reflections in Google Keep to determine the effectiveness of each activity. I will begin to build a portfolio of student artifacts, which show the ways in which differentiation met various learning needs and encouraged autonomy.

These short-term objectives have provided a firm groundwork for my long-term goal of developing an entirely adaptive learning module for EDU-214 within the next year. This module will teach pre-service teachers how to use Google Keep and other web tools to manage resources and apply differentiated instruction concepts in planning inclusive, technology-enhanced classrooms.
By planning, implementing, and reflecting on adaptive strategies throughout this phase, I’ve gained practical insight into how technology can support diverse learners. This experience will directly inform the structure and content of my EDU-214 module, ensuring it is grounded in evidence-based practices that emphasize equity, autonomy, and personalization.

Product/Identifier to Show I Have Met My Short-Term Goal:

To demonstrate that I have met my short-term goal, I added a table with all artifacts and materials I used in the implementation of a differentiated technology learning activity in EDU-214.

Reflection:
I am interested in seeing the way Standard 2.5.a encourages inclusive, adaptive learning environments through technology. It inspires me to design lessons that meet a range of student needs while supporting independent learning and individualized growth in the face of an ever-evolving learning environment.
